The Bayanihan Club of Union held a Nurses Appreciation Night on May 2, 2008 at The Holiday Inn, 160 Frontage Road, Newark, NJ 07114.
The Bayanihan Club of Union is a non-profit organization formed by Filipino families in 1997 to have a formalized group of Filipinos who celebrated their cultural heritage and held many projects to uphold these families in collaboration with the township leaders. Some of the projects include donations to the DARE program, honoring the veterans of World War II, celebrating cultural heritage during the Philippine Independence Day, Simbang Gabi at Christmastime, Easter egg hunting for the children, and summer picnics for the families.
Because of the Filipino involvement in Union township, a park has been given along Vauxhall Road to honor the Bayanihan Club, the Bayanihan Park.
Prominent members of the club have held positions as Mayor’s Aide, members of the school board, and many other outstanding citizens.
To celebrate National Nurses Week, the Bayanihan Club held The Nurses Appreciation Night with a dinner dance to honor the nurses in Union, and to honor the new President of the Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey, Madelyn Yu, MSN,
RN.
The guest speaker of the night was Leo Jurado, President of the New Jersey Board of Nursing, and president-elect of the Philippine Nurses Association of America. Leo spoke about the beginnings of PNANJ and its many contributions to the betterment of the Filipino nurses.
A random drawing of names celebrated the nursing pioneer, Florence Nightingale, as 3 nurses were bestowed the honor of the Nightingales. One such honoree was Majuvy Sulse, MSN, RN, President of PNANJ Essex County Subchapter.
